COMMUNITY PORTRAITS AND NARRATIVES
Taking the lead from the online blog and bestselling book “Humans of New York”, we are going to embark on an adventure to find out more about the people in our own community – a place we spend at least a quarter of our day walking, chatting, gossiping, and learning. But,
· who are the humans that make AISJ run smoothly,
· who are the folks that make the campus beautiful,
· who are the guys and gals that make sure we are safe and secure,
· who cleans up after us when we have neglected to clean up after ourselves,
· who repairs things when these things decide not to work or have been disrupted,
· who pays the bills,
· Who makes the “big” decisions,
· who are those fabulous people that make our sandwiches and feed us when we are hungry
· who are your teachers (besides the coaches of your learningJ)?
During this unit research is key, but instead of doing “book” research, you will research how to interview, how to take a portrait photo, how to publish Humans of AISJ, and in a short span of time your goal is to figure out not only how to accomplish these skills, but find out about the people in our community:
· who are they beyond what we see on the surface,
· what do they think about “stuff”,
· what do they care about most in the world,
· what would they change if they could change something
· what is/are their biggest fear(s) and/or joys?
There are lots more questions we will ask and, together, we will have lessons about
· deconstructing the HONY website – what do we see, what do we think?
· how to interview the people in our community so they open up to us
· how to take a portrait photograph
· how to edit someone else’s words so the narrative is succinct and compelling
· how to publish the stories
· how to collaborate, share ideas, solve problems, and help each other to discover the richness and diversity in our community
· how to respond when someone you are talking to shares a story or a thought that might be uncomfortable
· how to reflect upon what you have discovered about the people in our community
We will begin by studying and analysing Brandon Stanton’s work with HONY – how has his work become a literary phenomenon (His FB page has almost 17,000,000 likes and his books are bestsellers).

WHY ARE THESE PORTRAITS AND NARRATIVES SO COMPELLING THAT READERS (AND NON READERS) SPEND MONEY TO LEARN ABOUT THE PEOPLE PROFILED IN HIS BLOG AND BOOKS?

REQUIREMENTS/EXPECTATIONS
· Minimum of 5 publishable interviews w/portrait – of course you can do more if you wish
o 1 friend or fellow student – consider this practice
o 1 teacher from any grade level – shoot for HS or ES, someone you don’t know
o 3 or more from AAS Staff including our gardeners, dining staff, facilities workers, cleaners, secretaries, motor pool, and security.
· You will practice your interview skills and portrait photography BEFORE you interview the real subjects.
· You will work collaboratively in PIPPPS – Professional Interview, Photography, Publishing Packs - helping each other to produce beautiful portraits of the humans in our community – you will be each other’s critical eyes.
· You will transcribe and edit your interviews, choosing the most poignant or interesting story.
· You are in charge of keeping your photo portraits and your story narratives organized – how will you do this?
· You are responsible for any cameras you check out.
· It is up to you to follow the calendar and stick to deadlines although you will have flexibility in how you will achieve these deadlines.
· Self-management of time is key.
WHAT WE WANT TO REMEMBER
· The skill of interviewing strangers takes time, practice, and patience, but good interview skills can reveal the heart and soul of the people we encounter every day, but do not know.
· Communities are filled with people from different cultures with interesting stories worth hearing. We simply need to care enough to ask.
CRITICAL QUESTIONS
· How can asking the right questions reveal who a person is and what that person thinks on the inside as opposed to what we see on the outside?
· Why is it important to know the people in our community?
· What is the best way to publish our Humans of AISJ?
